Every American should have access to affordable, high-quality health care. There are many paths toward this goal; however, most of them involve putting the federal government's purchasing power to work to drive down health care costs.

We believe every American should have the option to purchase a public health insurance plan like Medicare. This would force private insurers to compete with the government-backed plan.

We also support legislation that would direct the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services to negotiate drug prices on behalf of Medicare. According to the Congressional Budget Office, this would reduce federal direct spending for Medicare by $345 billion over the period between 2023 and 2029.
